Nutrition and Wellness (especially during COVID-19)
Dear Players -
A critical component in the matrix that makes the complete high-performance athlete is NUTRITION.
In our Virtual Training program we will discuss nutrition in more detail, with particular emphasis on the role it plays in physical development and competition.
Also, periodically, we will assign reading for discussion in our Google Meets.
For next time, please read the following two articles. These articles talk of nutrition and wellness applicable to everyone, and also placed in the context of COVID-19. Some of the content may contain scientifically dense and complicated terminology, so please read with your parents/guardians or older siblings and ask them for assistance:
And, here are some more links, also from Harvard Medical School, that are generally applicable and helpful:

All New Jersey school buildings will remain closed for in-person instruction for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year
NJ Schools will remain closed for the rest of the school year. (See the NJ.gov page.)
This is for the best, and we’ll make the best of the circumstances.
First, don’t get disheartened. Social distance does not mean disconnection. Stay connected with friends and family by phone, email, chat and video conferencing as often as you can.
Though you are sheltered in place, continue to exercise and train.
Hunker down with more online learning. If you are having trouble with it, whether its technical difficulty, discomfort from constant screen time, agitation from studying in isolation, or anything unpleasant or negative, then reach out to a school staff member, friend or family. Today's posting (April 22, 2020) from USTA -- "Playing Tennis Safely: Player Tips and Recommendations"
Please read today’s USTA posting. Not more than a 10 minute read, it’s clear and informative.
Here’s my summary:
For those of us in NJ, we’re still required to stay-in-place. But, when a region or state lifts its stay-in-place restrictions, then we have the option to go out and play, BUT NOT the option to abandon caution.
In fact, we have to be hyper-vigilant. “We know that contamination by respiratory droplets from an infected person can potentially survive on hard surfaces up to three days” So, maintain caution and continue to follow the safety tips from reputable organizations.
USTA gives tips and recommendations for:
Before we play
Preparing to play
When playing
After playing
Their last tip is cautionary, necessary, and brilliant:
“USE FOUR BALLS OR SIX BALLS
Although unlikely, it’s possible that a tennis ball can transmit the COVID-19 virus, as virtually any hard surface can transmit the disease. So here is an extra precaution you can take to keep safe when playing tennis: Open two cans of tennis balls that do not share the same number on the ball. Take one set of numbered balls, and have your playing partner take a set of balls from the other can. Proceed with play, making sure to pick up your set of numbered balls only. Should a ball with the other number wind up on your side of the court, do not touch the ball with your hands. Use your racquet head or feet to advance the ball to the other side of the court.”
Be well, healthy and safe!
